Press On Nails for Nail Biters: Yes, They Work

You don't need long natural nails to wear press ons. You need enough nail plate for the press on to grip, and nearly everyone has that, even if you've bitten right down to the edge. The press on sits on your nail, not beyond it.

Choose extra short

Extra-short squoval sets are made for nails with little or no free edge. They look neat, don't feel like a sudden jump in length, and are easier to get used to. Try Ballet Extra Short, Blush Extra Short or Dusty Pink Extra Short.

Size by width, not length

Bitten nails are often short but a normal width. Measure across the widest point and match that. Length is irrelevant for sizing. Use our size guide.

Make sure it sits on nail, not skin

Trim the base of the press on if needed so it stops at your cuticle and doesn't touch the skin around it. If the skin around your nails is broken or sore, let it heal before applying, and see a GP if it doesn't.

Glue or tabs?

Short nail plates have a smaller surface to grip. Glue usually gives the firmer hold; tabs are gentler for a short test run. Compare both in nail glue vs adhesive tabs.

Remove gently

Never pull or pick press ons off, especially on nails that are growing out. Soak them off properly. See how to remove press on nails gently.
